On October 4, 2015 I went to Chicago Midway Airport. My flight left at 4:40 PM heading to Los Angeles. By the time I got to LA it was around 7:30 PM local time. After leaving my suitcase in the wrong bus and then having to chase the same bus through the parking to get all my things, I made it to the international terminal. Lots of waiting in line for security made me realize that I hadn't eaten in 12 hours. Panda Express was my first choice of cuisine of course! After eating some wonderful orange chicken with my new German friend Sonya who I met while waiting in line, I headed to my gate to meet some of the kids that will be doing the DTS with me. I then took off to fly over the ocean for 14 hours!
I finally landed in Brisbane, Australia and it felt so good. Lots of time spent going through customs and baggage claim, but I was so excited to see my new home. I feel like I had big expectations of the base, the country, and the people, but they were nothing compared to how amazing all of those things really were. I arrived at 6:30 AM so I had the whole day ahead of me. We started off with a tour of our awesome base, where there are lecture classrooms, lots of seating, workout rooms, and even an amazing coffee shop called The Meeting Place Cafe. After that, we decided to explore a little. I was starving again, of course, so we went to a super fancy McDonalds, or as the locals call it, Maccas. That was followed by a trip to the mall for some pillows and sheets. Even just getting goof off with the other guys in the mall and buy matching straw hats was a great way to get to know everyone. The rest of the day consisted of dinner, games to get to know each other, and crashing a dance party!
I woke up at 5 am because of the crazy time difference, which has been awesome because I have such a large amount of time to spend with the Lord before breakfast (AKA brekkie). We went to the mall again to buy a couple more little things and I got to know even more people in this DTS which was great. After that we had a fun and tasty meet and greet lunch outside with the whole base. There are 5 other schools going on at the same time here so it's a pretty hoppin place! Next we got to go to the park down the street and play soccer with the local school kids and have a cookout which was a blast. These kids here are so good at soccer it's insane. We ended the day with a wonderful worship service upstairs in the Community Centre. God is so good and I can't wait to see what he has in store for me and all my new friends here from all around the world.
It is now 7 am here in Brisbane on day 3 and we start our orientation today. So excited to here about our classes and tracks we get to take!!!
